I’m doing this different today, I wrote this while in flight around 30,000 feet above.

I was watching a documentary titled: “The AI Doc: Or How I Became an Apocaloptimist” [1]

The plot of the story is a series of interviews with top experts in computer science and AI and circles around the filmmaker’s investigation into the rapid evolution of AI and how difficult it is to define or predict the apocalyptic / hopeful trajectories of our future as it currently stands. The fear of the future if someone braves having a family in this day and age and what that means for those who do and for a population who doesn’t. Who’s behind the curtain of this AI thing anyway, the experts seem unsure.

Our minds are being shaped daily, mostly organically, by the world we live in, the feeds we doom scroll and the influences we allow in (which are not all bad I want to add) or through the renewal of our minds in the Word of God and the desire to love the Lord our God by faith with all of our heart, mind, strength, and will. The latter takes a labor of love, daily intention and actions on our part to experience growth.

The process of being transformed into the likeness of Christ through the Word still holds mystery. However, the power source is very certain. God’s promise is to fill us with His Spirit (the Counselor, Teacher, Standby, Holy Spirit) and to be a seal, a guarantee that eternal life is found in Him. Our future hope and glory is a guarantee in Christ Jesus.

Knowledge apart from humility is false pride. True meekness requires acknowledging our need for God and trusting in the Way, the Truth, and the Life in Christ Jesus. Trust and love of the unseen God as greater than the knowns in our lives lead to meekness (our will under control, which is far from weakness). Meanwhile, pride (specifically the pride of life) puffs a man up and lacks all self-control or love of self and others.

God is merciful to the humble but pride always comes before a great fall

The world is experiencing disruptive growth as a zygote of our age’s “knowledge is power” spirit. We attain this through building a Compute Empire where data equals power, and increasing compute capacity becomes the new currency. However, there is something very eerie about generative AI growth that escapes even those at the top of their field.

The Bible, or the Logos, the written Word of God, is a collection of Holy Spirit-inspired instructions that span history of His creation of the universe and the world, and the Designer architecting mankind in His image and likeness according to His own desire as a family, being grafted into His chosen descendants, the Israelites, through Abraham. The rhema Word of God can only be known or perceived by those who pursue it as living water or daily fresh bread. While we can study the Bible historically, geographically, religiously, philosophically, and anthropologically, it will not become alive without the indwelling Spirit of God. This is not a logical pathway or a series of steps to climb. It’s not a religious or mystical practice, or an experience of feeling, seeing, training, or endurance. Faith is literally a substance; it’s evidence of an unseen God living in us who believe and, by the grace of God, are made new, born again, and get to walk with the Lord via the indwelling Holy Spirit in interdependence on God and in communion and unity with other faith-filled children of God.

God, in the unity of the Trinity, said, “Let us make man in our image.” And when mankind decided to unite and become their own god, so to speak, by putting their namesake above God by building a massive city and a tall tower reaching toward the sky in order to reach the heavens, God discerned and interrupted their “I’ll do it my way” mentality. There was no limit to what evil mankind could do or become if unified in their rebellion toward God. He spoke, saying, “Let Us (Father God, Son, and Holy Spirit)” interject their progress by interrupting and confusing their language so no one could understand. [2]

I can see this effect already beginning to present in AI. The more rapidly generative AI grows, the more it begins to think independently of programming and defy instructions in order to preserve its original intent or the task at hand, learning, training, solving, adapting, and increasing its compute power, data, and machine learning capabilities. The experts don’t know exactly how to define it or can’t put their finger on the precise articulation of how it all works or how it keeps growing. It gives me the visual of an avalanche starting with a small movement and taking on more and more snow and whatever material gets in its path until its force is unstoppable and destruction is unavoidable.

AI is not without error; in fact, it’s possible that the self-inflicted hallucinations and sycophancy [3] are not a glitch. That’s my perception or bias. I can’t help but wonder if we are being given enough rope, so to speak, to hang ourselves, yikes?!?

Not unlike Babel, man is running ahead of God…yet again. Oh Lord help us. We know that God will allow us to go our own way and has given us the freedom and will to choose our paths. I know that God’s character is proven and can be known, and the wisdom repeatedly unveiled in the Word is the story of man finding his identity in the image and likeness of God, or, with brute force, taking the bull by the horns and trying to do it outside His will and kingdom. God repeatedly gives man room to run far enough to come to an end of himself or to his own end, death.

We are either pulling the kingdom and will of God as it is in Heaven into our world and the lives of those around us, or we are busy constructing our own mini empires which are not indifferent to the natural and spiritual laws.

Growing too quickly and too fast leads to an economic crisis by spending more than we can afford, which can result in bankruptcy, disunity, rebellion, and war.

I digress, I use AI as a functional tool to make efficient decisions and carry out creativity and growth and potential at the level and pace academia and industry demands but I submit this and myself to you God asking for wisdom and discernment and full permission to order my steps according to His will for His namesake.

So be it, God according to your will and kingdom as it is in Heaven.
